How to choose a fabric roll

Tutorial

The project

This tutorial was designed to help new employees learn and visualize a manufacturing process.

  • Tools: Articulate Storyline 360, Powerpoint (for graphics)

  • Learners: New hires at a waxed food wrap manufacturer

The problem

Part of the process of creating wax food wraps is cutting out various sizes from rolls of waxed fabric. To minimize waste, certain rolls are used for certain wrap sizes (or combinations of sizes). The process can take a while to grasp, resulting in more wasted scraps than necessary.

The solution

While employees had a simple job aid at their disposal, they needed a way to visualize the process. A tutorial video with many examples lets learners visualize the task and better understand the reasoning behind the process.

The process

Using Storyline 360, I created a tutorial video showing how each wrap can be cut out of each fabric roll size. I designed scaled versions of wraps and fabric rolls in PowerPoint to show how they fit together. I finished with a narration. The tutorial is followed by a practice activity, which you can see here

Takeaways

Visuals can be hugely powerful. Some basic graphics and simple animations provided new sensory dimensions to enrich understanding and increase retention.
