The project

This drag-and-drop interaction mimics a real-world scenario within a body care company: selecting the correct product to ship in an order. Learners practice “filling an order” by placing a product in a virtual cardboard box (to ship) or on a digital shelf (to put away). The learning activity follows a tutorial on how to read a packing slip.

  • Tools: Articulate Storyline 360, Powerpoint

  • Learners: New hires at a body care company

The problem

Misreading a packing slip or a product can lead to mistakes in shipping. New hires are susceptible to making these errors because they're unfamiliar with product lines and inexperienced at reading packing slips.

The solution

A simulation of filling an order gives new hires the opportunity to practice reading labels and packing slips in a safe, low-stakes environment.

The process

Using Storyline 360, I created a drag-and-drop interaction with a virtual cardboard box and shelf as targets. Then, I assigned a variety of product photos to each box. Because the products are small, I enabled a zoom feature so users could read the labels more clearly. I also included a link to the shop website so users could see products from the buyer’s point of view.

Then, using Powerpoint, I combined items from several packing slip photos to create a single mock packing slip. Finally, I added feedback and enabled unlimited attempts to allow users to gain all the practice they needed.

Here’s a video of the activity in action:

Takeaways

Training is more meaningful when it relates to real-world, on-the-job scenarios. This learning activity provided new employees with a chance to read packing slips, get to know product variations, and practice care in filling orders. As an added bonus, users said it was fun!
